What a Wonderful Phrase

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

What a Wonderful Phrase offers a fascinating look at the origins and meanings of idioms from around the world. Perfect for inquisitive children who want to know why we say it's raining "cats and dogs" or what it really means for something to cost "an arm and a leg."

This book offers a really interesting look not just at the origins of phrases but also fascinating facts about a variety of topics - from the literal location of the "middle of no where" to famous Spanish inventions. We all learnt something new reading this book!

What a Wonderful Phrase is easy to dip in and out of, and it would work well reading one phrase a day either in a classroom or at home. We read it across a few sittings and it prompted lots of interesting discussions. It encourages you to think about the meaning of words and the flexibility of language, as well as history and cultural context. There's also a useful pronunciation guide to help with sayings in other languages.

The illustrations are lovely. When this book arrived, I sat down to flick through it by myself but Montoya's colourful pictures quickly attracted the attention of my children and I ended up reading it aloud to them.

What a Wonderful Phrase is written by Nicola Edwards and illustrated by Manu Montoya
